Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) was a French artist renowned for her realistic paintings and sculptures of animals.
Living in a way that was unconventional for his time, Bonheur wore men's clothes, smoked, and lived with his partner.
Bonheur achieved international success with his monumental painting "The Horse Fair," exhibited in 1853 at the Paris Salon and admired by Queen Victoria. In 1865, the French Empress Eugénie awarded him the Legion of Honour.
