Portrait of Eugène DELACROIX (1798-1863), the main French painter representing Romanticism.
Business card format 5.5 x 8.7 cm
"In 1858, Delacroix visited Félix Nadar, who greatly admired the painter and wanted to complete the series of portraits of great men he planned to exhibit the following year at the French Photographic Society. The pose is full of authority, and the lighting beautifully highlights the face. However, the painter, dissatisfied with the image, asked the photographer to destroy the negative and the prints, which, fortunately, the latter wisely refrained from doing." (Excerpt from Delacroix and Photography, BnF)
