The ocean liner "La France" is being demolished.
The first ocean liner "La France" was built in Penhoët (Loire-Atlantique) for the Compagnie générale transatlantique and was launched on October 1, 1864.
The sister ship of "l' Impératrice Eugénie" " La France", unlike the France of 1962 (3rd of that name), had a very long life, remarkable for the time: put into service in 1865, it was not dismantled until 1910 in Cherbourg, after forty-five years of transatlantic crossings.
Its paddle wheels were removed in 1874 and it was lengthened by 12 meters. More powerful propeller-driven engines replaced the original ones. A third mast was added.
"France" participated in the Tonkin expedition, between two voyages.
