For over twenty years, Alexandre Bertrand worked as a daguerreotypist and then photographer in the capital. He is believed to have founded his business in 1846 at the age of 24. After operating at 6 bis Quai des Orfèvres, he moved to 34 Rue Dauphine in 1851.
Later he would boast of having produced more than 80,000 daguerreotype portraits.
The Musée d'Orsay holds several portraits of him.
