Magic Lantern, La Bonne Presse, circa 1908

3 Series of humorous glass plates

-Complete "By Car" series: 6 hand-painted plates

-"The Magician" Series: 2 black and white engraved plates

-"Extraordinary Fishing" Series: 3 hand-painted plates

This lantern was featured in the 1908 catalogue of the Maison de la Bonne Presse, created by Georges-Michel COISSAC:

"Good Press Device No. 1 recommended for speakers"

It is an "elegant and robust device, with a rich body…". It consists of a body made of thick Russian sheet metal with doors on both sides and a double rear door surmounted by a conical, openwork dome with a frieze-patterned chimney. The front is entirely made of varnished copper with very thick, spring-loaded square plates and counter-plates allowing the insertion of various slide holders and scientific accessories.

The magic lantern is the ancestor of projection devices; it allows images painted on glass plates to be projected through a lens, using the light of a candle or an oil lamp.
