In the mid-19th century, brass oil lamps became widespread and specialized, including candle lamps, wall lamps, flashlights, and lamps for photographic development with red colored glass appearing as early as 1885.

These red glass safelight sleeves are quite rare; they allow photos to be developed by providing a little light without altering the chemicals.
