Piazza del Duomo with the Rebecchino district and the Porche dei Figini which were destroyed as early as 1860. These two districts, particularly renowned in the 17th century, became frequented by the city's underworld, attracted by the continuous influx of pilgrims visiting the cathedral.
The general plan for Milan, established in 1810, provided for the demolition of these two districts, but it was only 50 years later that the demolition work allowed for the artistic enhancement of the Duomo.
