View of Damascus and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains
The Anti-Lebanon mountain range extends from the Syrian city of Homs to the Golan Heights. To the west, on the Lebanese side, it overlooks the inner Bekaa Valley, and to the east, on the Syrian side, it overlooks the Ghouta of Damascus and the Syrian Desert.
Damascus was one of the cities visited during the "Grand Tour" of the Orient, an initiatory journey of the 19th century.
Felix Bonfils was a French photographer (1831 - 1885). He learned photography from Niepce de Saint-Victor, nephew of Nicéphore Niepce.
He opened his photographic studio in 1867 in Beirut, Lebanon, where he specialized in the architecture and landscapes of Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Greece.
