Eugène Atget (1857–1927) was a French photographer famous for documenting old Paris before its transformation. For over thirty years, he captured streets, buildings, and scenes of daily life with a gaze that was both documentary and poetic. His work influenced the Surrealists and generations of photographers. Recognized primarily after his death, he is now considered a pioneer of modern photography.
The Fontaine de Mars, or Fontaine du Gros-Caillou, is a neoclassical monument in the 7th arrondissement of Paris (129 rue Saint-Dominique). Designed by François-Jean Bralle and decorated by Pierre-Nicolas Beauvallet during the Napoleonic era, it is distinguished by its friezes of marine animals and its bronze mascarons, inspired by those of the Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons.
