Large albumen print (46 x 38.5 cm) signed, mounted on original card (49.5 x 64). Author's stamp on the mount.
Dominique Roman was a French photographer born in Arles. Specializing in the photography of ancient monuments, his work, in the form of an album, was presented to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie during their visit to Arles in 1860. In 1861, he exhibited several of these views to the French Photographic Society and enriched his collection with monuments from neighboring towns such as Montmajour, Les Baux, Saint-Rémy, Tarascon, Avignon, Orange, Beaucaire, Nîmes, Saint-Gilles, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Aix and Saint-Chamas.
Inspired by Édouard Baldus, to whom he is often compared, he also uses the assembly of negatives to capture the monumentality of the sites. He highlights Provence, its Roman and medieval monuments inspired by Antiquity,
