Photograph taken in Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) and dated 1879-1880 on the mount at the bottom center. It is a striking image showing the Loire completely frozen over.
"The exceptionally low temperatures of the winter of 1879-1880 (-28°C in Orléans) caused the Loire River to freeze over with a thick layer of ice. A sudden thaw led to a rise in water levels and the breakup of the ice floe into enormous blocks, which followed the current at high speed and struck the bridge piers." Archives of Saumur, no. 201
Under the name Delphin, Christophe Delphin Comergnac (1839-1883) was a photographer in Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) and then in Rochefort (Charente-Maritime). Upon his death, his wife Eleontine took over the Delphin business, which was very well-known in Rochefort and frequented by, among others, Louis Marie Julien Viaud, better known as Pierre Loti.
