 Quarter plate format (approximately 7.5 x 9.5 cm) with a white mat, typical of early daguerreotypes; black mats would become standard practice after 1850.
 Portrait of an elegantly dressed father with his son holding his arm beside a small table on which rests a patterned vase containing hydrangeas.
 On the back the date is handwritten: June 17, 1847.
