The dance card appeared around 1820 and allowed young women to write down the names of the gentlemen who had invited them or with whom they wished to dance. They became true works of art, made of precious materials such as silver, ivory, or mother-of-pearl.
This notebook is made of tortoiseshell and contains an enamel portrait of Mathieu Deroche.
Mathieu Deroche (1837-1937) miniaturist and photographer is best known for his coloured portraits transferred onto enamel, a process which bears his name.
