Doge's Palace and Lion Column, Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy
In front of the Doge's Palace on the Piazzetta, the column supports the bronze winged lion of Saint Mark. In fact, it is more likely an oriental chimera, a war trophy, to which wings were later added. The lion has become emblematic of Venice.
Carlo Naya (1816-1882) was one of the pioneers of photography in Italy. After studying law in Pisa, he settled in Venice in St. Mark's Square to open one of the largest establishments dedicated to photography of his time.
