Armand Barbès (1809-1870) was a French republican activist, an opponent of the July Monarchy.
Sentenced to life imprisonment following the 1839 insurrection aimed at overthrowing Louis-Philippe, then freed by the 1848 revolution, he went into exile in the Netherlands in 1854.
Georges-Mathurin Legé, a chemist by training, joined forces in 1861 with photographers Carjat and Bergeron-Danguy to create a photography business which he would later buy back.
