The Nil Melior was manufactured by Macris-Boucher and used with plates. Its system also allowed the use of Autochrome plates.

Inside its original leather case is a table of exposure times for autochromes.

The name "Nil Melior" is said to come from the Latin phrase "Nihil Melior", meaning "There is nothing better".
