Manufactured by S. Peck & Co. in the 1850s, this ambrotype or daguerreotype case is a registered design of the company. Relief scenes are molded in Bakelite, and the interior features a piece of embossed velvet on one side and the ambrotype itself, set with a pinchbeck mount, on the other. Samuel Peck is the first known plastic molder in the United States.
The relief design depicts the Washington Monument in Richmond, Virginia on one side and on the other, two archangels and two eagles surround a rosette.
